The January-February Birthday bash at The Grand Baie Residences

It happened on Saturday, February 27, 2016. The birth of the amazing people and young leaders at ALC is not something that the community takes for granted. The second cohort of the inaugural class arrived on campus in mid-January. This caused a few young leaders, whose birthdays fell before the arrival date, to have their birthdays ‘uncelebrated’.

But the ALC community could not let that happen. We developed a culture of having a joint birthday party celebration for the members of the ALC community at the end of every month. For the month of February, we decided to merge those whose birthdays fell in January as theirs weren’t celebrated.

The evening kicked off with a lot of excitement. We had DJ Traxler (Bakoena Seboka, an ALC student from Lesotho) on the beat; filling the air with magical tunes across diverse genres of music. The students could not resist the allure of the music. We danced till we dropped (literally). Then the residence chefs made BBQ and chicken kebabs available for the students to celebrate the special occasion. The scent of good food, the sounds of good music in company of great people made the evening amazing. Love was in the air as the rest of the ALU community ‘idolized’ the celebrants (members of the ALC community born between January and February).

Through this event, we were able to realize just how tight our little community of 180 has become in just a month and a couple of days. It became a vivid reality that we are no longer those strangers who met each other for the first time a few months back. We have grown to become friends. We have grown to become family. We have grown to become the unified ALU Inaugural Class!
